What Does Safety in the Workplace Mean to You

We all have a role to play in making a safe and healthy workplace.
If someone were to ask you why safety is important, how would you respond? You may “know” that it’s important to keep safety in mind as we go about your daily activities, but how would you explain the reasons why this is the case. Here are some things to think about.
A work accident, workplace accident, occupational accident, or accident at work is a “discrete occurrence in the course of work, which leads to physical or mental harm”. According to an article about health and safety by theInternational Labour Organization (ILO), more than 2.3 million deaths per year die as a result of occupational accidents or work-related diseases. That is roughly 6,300 people daily. 317 million accidents occur on the job annually; many of these resulting in extended absences from work. The human cost of this unwanted trial is huge and the economic burden of poor occupational safety and health practices is estimated at 4% of global Gross Domestic Product each year.
Employers and employees need to set goals around health and safety and then work together as a team to achieve them. Health and safety in the workplace should be at the front of everyone’s minds. To have a safe workplace, everyone within a company must be involved. Employees can be encouraged to review their work areas to ensure no hazards are present. Hazards that they cannot remove or repair should be reported to management.
Employers must:
be responsible for providing a safe working environment
ensure you are properly trained and supervised so you can work safely
work with you to:
identify hazards in the workplace, and
ensure that those hazards are eliminated, isolated or minimised.
eliminate hazards where possible, depending on how much harm it could cause and how difficult and expensive it would be. Where a hazard cannot be eliminated you have the right to know about the hazard and what you need to do (or not do) to work safely.
As an employee, you can make your workplace safer by:
being involved in processes to improve health and safety
sticking to correct procedures and using the right equipment
wearing protective clothing and equipment
helping new employees, trainees and visitors to the workplace understand the right safety practices and why the practices exist, and
communicating any safety concerns to your employer.
